VCL Match Report
BBC v JC Collaborators
It was a warm, windy day when we welcomed the Javea/Calpe Collaborators for our final VCL home
games of this season’s campaign. Today marked the last representative competitive game played on
the ‘old’ carpet. We will all have to think of a new set of excuses when the new surface is laid.
Ladies Singles – Pam Coombe v Dee Hamilton
Pam and Dee treated us to an entertaining and high-quality match in tricky conditions. Pam started
strongly and was well worth her lead (8-2) after five ends. Pam continued to dominate leading 12 -7
after ten ends. Dee then showed why she is a Spanish international, fighting back to take a 14- 18
lead after seventeen ends. Pam dug deep and found another gear taking 7 shots in the next four
ends to win 21-18.
Men’s Singles – Dave Dickinson v Dave Hard
Both Dave’s started well sharing the early ends. High quality bowling from both bowlers left the
marker complaining about the price of chalk. After six ends Dave Dickinson had edged out to a 6-3
lead. The home player then began to dominate the mat and force the visitor to take on increasingly
difficult shots. After ten ends Dave Dickinson led 16-6. Although the ends remained competitive the
home player continued to edge the play. Dave Dickinson won the match 21 -9 after seventeen
ends.
Pairs – Jeff Richards & Jeff Stevens v John Pittaway & Keith Hamilton
The initial stages of this match were dominated by a skilled exhibition of lead bowling by John
Pittaway. The visitors lead after eight ends 3-8. Although the home team were playing well the
visitors always seemed to find the key bowl to minimise any damage. After twelve ends the ‘Jeffs’
found themselves trailing 6-10. The next end saw a momentum swing when the home team scored 3
to close within a point. Despite some great saving bowls by the visitors the home went in front 13-
12 on the sixteenth end. Sadly, at this point John Pittaway had to retire to deal with a personal
matter. All our best wishes are with John. Result 13-12
Trips – Alan Guest, Bert Mclean & Trefor Evans v Joy & Paul Savage & John Coates
Bert Mclean had to come in as a late replacement for Tony Scott in this game. The home team led a
tight game 6-4 after eight ends. The three home players then began to dominate the heads, bowling
well and scoring heavily 27-4 after fourteen ends. Although the visitors took 5 shots in the last 4
ends the victory for the home team was emphatic. 27-9
Rinks – Linda Richards, Richard Potts, Gail Cleaver & Mary Cockell v Dave Osborne, Carol Davies,
Brenda Burgess & Dudley Davis
One for the Spectators! Very rarely do you find eight bowlers all bowling well. This game was a great
advert for bowling and the result was always in doubt. After twelve end the score was 6-6 with no
team able to score more than one point per end. The visitors edged the next for ends to lead 8-10
after sixteen ends. On the seventeenth end, where the lead changes several time, Mary was able to
trail the Jack for 2 shots. All square on the last end where the shot changed hands on four occasions.
The home team managed to hold on to the shot and won the match 11-10.
Overview
It is nice to be able to write a report where the team won close matches and had a full reward for
their performance. A shot difference of 93-58 and a 12-0 points total are a very welcome change,
following a couple of disappointing results. Our last game is at Calpe next week, lets finish on a high.
