Benitachell Bowls Club has a long association with umpiring and marking – the Costa Blanca Umpires and Markers Association was founded by BBC member Harry Winfield in 1994 who served as President in past years.

Benitachell B.C. can probably boast more umpires and markers than any other club in Spain, with over forty association members. Their activities at club level are coordinated by the CBUMA delegate. This includes appointing umpires and markers for club competitions and championships as requested by the Bowls Committee – no mean feat with our busy bowling calendar, and particularly challenging for the B.B.C. Open & Masters Competitions in the spring and early autumn which involves, as well as pairs and triples, large entries for both men’s and ladies’ singles, with the consequent need for numerous “volunteers” to mark.

The CBUMA runs regular courses for markers, usually at least one course per year in the North Alicante region. These are intensive three-day courses of both theory and practice over a two week period culminating in a practical and written assessment. they are generally much enjoyed by the participants, who are always surprised how much there is to learn.

Qualified markers are subsequently eligible to apply to join an umpires course, also held over three days, normally one per year in the province. Details of upcoming courses, including update and refresher courses for existing members, can be found on the notice board and on this web page.
